Standard Paper Sizes Guide: Letter, Legal, A4, A3 & Specs

Physically Tested & Fact-Checked
Published: July 9, 2026

Paper sizing standards differ significantly between North America and the rest of the world. If you’ve ever tried to print a document designed for A4 paper on US Letter (or vice versa), you’ve experienced this mismatch firsthand — margins shift, text gets cut off, and layouts break. This guide explains both systems comprehensively.

ISO 216: International Paper Sizes (A Series)

The ISO 216 standard is used by virtually every country in the world except the United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico. It was first adopted in Germany in 1922 and became an international standard in 1975.

The Elegant Math Behind ISO 216

The ISO system uses a brilliantly simple principle: every paper size has an aspect ratio of 1:√2 (approximately 1:1.4142). This specific ratio has a unique mathematical property:

When you fold a sheet in half along its long edge, the resulting half-sheet has exactly the same proportions as the original.

This means an A3 sheet folded in half produces two A4 sheets. An A4 folded in half produces two A5 sheets. The proportions remain constant at every size.

A Series Sizes

The A series starts with A0, which has a total area of exactly 1 square meter (but with a 1:√2 aspect ratio, so it’s not a square).

Common Uses for Each A Size

FormatCommon Applications
A0Technical drawings, architectural blueprints, large posters
A1Flip chart pages, large format printing
A2Medium posters, diagrams
A3Tabloid-style printouts, drawings, menus
A4Standard documents, letters, forms, printer paper
A5Notebooks, booklets, flyers, planners
A6Postcards, pocket booklets, small flyers
A7Playing cards (close), small notes

B and C Series

ISO 216 also defines B and C series:

B Series — Sized between A sizes, used primarily for posters, books, and envelopes:

FormatDimensions (mm)Dimensions (in)
B4250 × 3539.84 × 13.90
B5176 × 2506.93 × 9.84

C Series — Designed as envelope sizes to fit corresponding A paper:

EnvelopeDimensions (mm)Fits Paper
C4229 × 324A4 flat (unfolded)
C5162 × 229A4 folded once, or A5 flat
C6114 × 162A4 folded twice, or A5 folded once
DL110 × 220A4 tri-folded (standard business)

North American ANSI Paper Sizes

The United States and Canada use paper sizes defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). These sizes evolved from traditional US paper manufacturing practices rather than mathematical principles.

A4 vs US Letter: Key Differences

This is the most frequently encountered paper size mismatch:

PropertyA4US Letter
Width210 mm (8.27”)215.9 mm (8.5”)
Height297 mm (11.69”)279.4 mm (11.0”)
Area62,370 mm²60,322 mm²
Aspect Ratio1:1.414 (1:√2)1:1.294
Wider?No — A4 is narrowerYes — Letter is wider
Taller?Yes — A4 is tallerNo — Letter is shorter

A4 is narrower but taller than US Letter. This means:

  • Printing an A4 document on Letter paper may clip the bottom margin
  • Printing a Letter document on A4 paper may leave extra space at the bottom
  • When designing for international distribution, create documents at A4 size — Letter-sized printers can handle A4 with minor margin adjustments

Practical Tips

For Printing

  • Always check “Actual Size” or “100%” in your print dialog — never “Fit to Page” if you need accurate dimensions
  • When printing measurement templates, verify output accuracy by measuring a known element on the printed page

For Measurement Reference

  • A sheet of US Letter paper makes an excellent measurement reference: it’s exactly 8.5 × 11.0 inches
  • A sheet of A4 paper provides a reference of exactly 210 × 297 mm
  • Folding either paper in half, quarters, or eighths gives you precise fractional references

For International Shipping

  • If shipping documents internationally, use A4 paper and C4/C5/DL envelopes for maximum compatibility
  • Documents printed on US Letter often don’t fit properly in European C4 envelopes
